Cognition makes Devin Oncall generally available for production incidents

Cognition has launched Devin Oncall, which answers alerts, bug reports and incidents first, traces them to a root cause and opens a fix PR before paging an engineer. Here is how it works and what teams should check before handing it the pager.

CognitionDevinCoding agentsIncident response

Cognition has launched Devin Oncall as generally available, extending its Devin coding agent from writing software into keeping it running in production[^1]. Devin investigates alerts and bug reports as they arrive, works out the root cause, and can mitigate the problem or open a tested fix pull request before a human is paged[^1][^2].

How it handles the pager

Devin Oncall comes as three products[^2]. Responders watch a stream of alerts or support and bug reports. Incidents puts Devin into your incident channel, where it investigates alongside engineers and maintains a live incident document[^1]. Reports summarise, on a schedule, which alert thresholds to tune, which issues keep recurring and which PRs Devin opened and merged[^2].

Responders use a parent and child agent design. A hidden parent agent watches the channel and decides whether an alert is a new issue; only then does it launch a child investigation with fresh context[^1]. Cognition says that skips roughly 60% of investigations and cuts costs by more than half compared with investigating every alert[^1].

To stop the agent settling on the first plausible answer, a second review agent runs alongside Devin and checks its reasoning and tool calls for mistakes such as treating correlation as causation or treating a recent deploy as the cause rather than a lead[^1].

It learns your systems

Setup is a one-time step per organisation: connect at least one telemetry tool, and Devin spends usually one to two hours learning your systems and writing skills for later sessions[^2]. After that it keeps three layers of context: memory for each responder, organisation-wide skills it generates for common debugging tasks, and organisation-wide memory saved from past investigations[^1].

What customers report

Cognition says Devin Oncall now handles thousands of production alerts a day[^1]. It quotes AngelList saying Devin found the right root cause 3.5 times more often than its in-house tool and handled half of incidents end to end, and says RV Tech, the Rivian and Volkswagen joint venture, uses it to triage customer vehicle reports[^1]. On the SREGym-Lite benchmark, Cognition reports 100% end-to-end success, with its fastest run at 2 minutes 21 seconds on Claude Opus 5.5[^1]. These are vendor figures from Cognition's own evaluation.

What it changes for shipping teams

For a small team, the real cost of on-call is the context switching, not the pages themselves. An agent that groups duplicate alerts, does the first hour of log and trace digging, and hands an engineer a severity, a suspected cause and a draft fix changes who has to wake up and why. The catch is access: Devin needs your telemetry, code and deploy history to be useful. Start it on one noisy alert channel, keep humans approving every fix PR, and judge it on whether its root causes hold up before you let it touch more of production.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

01

What is Devin Oncall?

Devin Oncall is a product from Cognition, launched as generally available on 15 October 2026 (US time). It starts work as soon as an alert, bug report or incident fires, uses your telemetry, code, deployments, runbooks and past incidents to find the root cause, and can remediate the issue and open a fix pull request for an engineer to review.

02

What are Responders, Incidents and Reports?

They are Devin Oncall's three products. Responders watch a stream of alerts or bug reports and investigate new issues. Incidents has Devin join an incident channel, investigate alongside engineers and keep a live incident document. Reports give a recurring summary of alert thresholds to tune, recurring issues, and the PRs Devin opened and merged.

03

How long does Devin Oncall take to set up?

Cognition's docs describe a one-time setup per organisation. You connect at least one telemetry tool, then Devin spends usually one to two hours learning your systems from telemetry and code and writing skills that every Oncall session uses. Responders, Incidents and Reports become available when that finishes.

04

Does Devin Oncall investigate every alert?

No. A parent agent watches the alert stream and only starts a new investigation when an alert looks like a new issue. Cognition says responders skip roughly 60% of investigations by matching known issues and grouping related alerts, which it says saves customers more than half the cost of investigating every alert.

05

How well does Devin Oncall perform?

Cognition says Devin Oncall reached 100% end-to-end success on SREGym-Lite, a 17-fault benchmark, with its fastest run at 2 minutes 21 seconds using Claude Opus 5.5. Those figures come from Cognition's own evaluation, and the public leaderboard also shows CloudThinker at 100% with GPT-6 Astra, so test it against your own incidents.
