A payments company growing fast

The round follows three straight years in which Pliant doubled its business, and comes shortly after it passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue[1]. It has more than 300 staff across eight offices and processes billions of dollars a year for customers in travel, insurance and AI-native companies, plus banks, fintechs and software platforms that build their own commercial payment products on it[1]. Pliant is a principal member of Visa and Mastercard and issues commercial cards in 13 currencies across 32 countries[1].

Agents on the payment rails

Pliant's own AI agents already automate recurring finance work for customers[1]. The bigger bet is outside agents: assistants like Claude and ChatGPT, or a company's own automations, can connect through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and run payment workflows inside other business processes[1]. Pliant's developer docs walk through connecting AI tools to its remote MCP server[2], and the company says permissions, controls and auditability are built in[1].

"Whether an established business wants AI to automate its payment processes with the right guardrails, or an AI-native company needs a licensed partner that moves as fast as it does, Pliant is built for that," CEO and co-founder Malte Rau said[1].

Where the money goes

The funding will support expansion in the US and Canada, prepare entry into more international markets and speed up its AI roadmap[1][3].

Why it matters

As agents start doing real finance work, the regulated plumbing underneath matters more, not less, as Seaya Nova partner Vinoth Jayakumar put it[1]. By making MCP a front door to a licensed card issuer, Pliant is trying to turn "let the agent pay the invoice" from a demo into something a finance team can switch on with controls attached.
