Ledger Atom is a crypto signer that also runs your everyday apps

Ledger has opened reservations for Atom, an Android-based device with a physically isolated secure chip and screen for approving payments, logins and AI agent actions. Here is how it works, what it costs and what is still a promise.

Ledger has unveiled Atom, a device that runs ordinary Android apps on one side and Ledger's own secure operating system on the other, and opened reservations for it[^1][^2]. The pitch from chief executive Pascal Gauthier is that your phone is a window and Atom adds a gate: everyday apps up front, with the final approval for anything that matters handled by a secure chip you hold[^1].

How it works

Atom pairs the Android Open Source Project with Ledger OS running on an EAL6+ secure element, with the display and touch control physically isolated from Android[^3]. An FPGA chip switches between Standard Mode for apps and Secure Mode for approvals, and a bar at the top of the screen tells you which one you are in[^2]. A hardware switch cuts power to the cameras and microphone at the circuit level, and Secure Mode cuts them automatically regardless of the switch[^2].

Ledger Wallet runs natively, so the same device starts a transaction and signs it on its trusted display, with no cable or second device[^1][^2]. Passkeys live in the secure chip and every login is approved on a screen only Ledger OS controls[^1]. Atom will also support GPG and OpenPGP, so you can encrypt a message before sending it through any messaging app, and only another Atom in Secure Mode can decrypt it[^2]. Ledger says Atom is post-quantum ready, compatible with the NIST post-quantum standards and with that cryptography accelerated in the secure hardware[^2].

Who is on board

Solana Mobile named Ledger its first hardware expansion partner, and its Seeker app, combining the Solana dApp Store and wallet, will be preinstalled with more than 1,500 dApps available on Seeker today[^3]. Kraken's parent Payward is exploring support so Kraken clients can review and sign transactions on Atom's trusted display[^2]. Persona is Ledger's first identity partner, for proving facts such as being over 18 without handing over more personal data than needed[^1].

The agent angle

The part that reaches beyond crypto is Ledger Agent Intent. Agents can read and propose actions without holding your private keys, but every sensitive action has to be physically approved on Atom or a compatible Ledger signer before it executes[^2]. Approval requests land in one place so agents keep working while you approve when you are ready, and Ledger says this already works on the signers people own today[^4]. OpenClaw will be integrated and preloaded on Atom from day one[^2].

What it doesn't tell you yet

Atom is still in development. Ledger's own fine print says specifications, features, design and price may change, its images are illustrative, and app availability depends on certifications and licences[^1]. The press release says Summer 2027 and the blog estimates Q2 2027, and US delivery depends on FCC certification[^1][^2]. Founder's Edition reservations are $849 with a refundable $100 deposit, rising to $899 after launch[^2]. The launch also lands while Ledger investigates modified hardware wallets sold through a third-party reseller, and The Block reports Ledger says Atom's new tamper protections are built to block that kind of implant[^5].

What it changes for shipping teams

If you are building agents that touch money, bookings or accounts, the pattern Ledger is selling is worth copying now: let the agent propose, keep the keys out of its reach, and require a human approval on hardware for anything irreversible. Agent Intent and the Ledger Platform portal are open today, so a team can wire hardware-backed approvals into an existing app and reach Ledger's existing signers without waiting for Atom to ship[^1][^4].

FAQ

Questions, answered.

01

What is Ledger Atom?

Ledger Atom is a security and privacy device Ledger unveiled at its Op3n 2026 event in Paris on 15 October. It runs everyday apps on Android open source, alongside Ledger OS on a secure element chip that handles sensitive approvals such as crypto transactions, logins and AI agent actions.

02

Is Ledger Atom a phone?

Ledger says Atom is not designed to replace your phone but to secure you where your phone cannot. It runs everyday apps, but Ledger positions it as its most capable signer rather than a phone, and it will only be sold through Ledger's own site.

03

How does Secure Mode work?

An FPGA chip switches the device between Standard Mode, where Android apps run, and Secure Mode, where Ledger OS takes over the display and touch control. A bar at the top of the screen shows which mode you are in, and Ledger says the architecture is built so Android apps cannot see or interfere with Secure Mode. Cameras and microphone are cut in hardware whenever Secure Mode is on.

04

How does it work with AI agents?

Ledger Agent Intent lets agents read and propose actions without holding your private keys, and every sensitive action must be physically approved on Atom or a compatible Ledger signer before it runs. Ledger says it works today on compatible signers, and OpenClaw will be integrated and preloaded on Atom from day one.

05

How much does Ledger Atom cost and when does it ship?

Founder's Edition reservations are open at $849 with a fully refundable $100 deposit, and orders after launch will be $899. Ledger's press release says Summer 2027 and its blog estimates Q2 2027, noting the date is an estimate and delivery depends on certifications including FCC approval in the US.
