Paper Instruments' Ultramarine 1 Flash targets office work at cents per task

Paper Instruments has released Ultramarine 1 Flash, a reinforcement-learning post-train of GLM-5.3 Flash for finance, legal and consulting work that it says beats Claude Fable 5 on its internal benchmark at $0.13 a task. The API is live; the weights are promised but not out yet.

Paper Instruments has released Ultramarine 1 Flash, a model trained specifically for professional knowledge work in finance, law, consulting and operations, and priced to cost cents per task[^1][^2].

What it is

Ultramarine applies large-scale reinforcement learning to GLM-5.3 Flash, an open base model[^1]. Paper Instruments calls the approach non-verifiable RL: instead of training only on tasks with a single checkable answer, it rewards the model against rubrics for substance, accuracy and presentation on finished work such as Excel models, PowerPoint decks and Word documents[^1][^2]. The company says this gives the model stronger prose and visual hierarchy than typical models, and that prompts need tuning to get the most from it[^3].

The numbers, and whose they are

Paper Instruments reports that Ultramarine improves on its GLM-5.3 Flash base across all six knowledge-work benchmarks it tested, by 4.1 points on average, while generating 6.5% fewer tokens[^1]. On its internal PI Knowledge Work suite it scores 59.3 at $0.13 per task, ahead of Claude Fable 5 at 57.8 ($8.19) and GPT-5.6 Sol at 55.1 ($2.09), and within three points of Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol[^1]. The company says those internal scores correlate with the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at r = 0.81[^1].

The public benchmarks are more mixed. Ultramarine tops JobBench at 62.9 and FrontierFinance at 53.3 among the models Paper Instruments compares, but trails Gemini 3.8 Flash and Claude Fable 5 on DiligenceBench and APEX-Agents 1.1[^2]. All of these are the company's own runs.

How to use it

The API is live and OpenAI-compatible at https://api.paperinstruments.com/v1 with the model id ultramarine-1-flash; it also works through a Responses endpoint and the Anthropic SDK[^3]. Pricing is $0.15 per million input tokens, $0.03 cached and $0.50 output, the same as its base model[^2]. Reasoning is always on, and the docs recommend max effort with streaming[^3]. The product page describes it as an open model, but the weights are listed as coming soon and are not downloadable yet[^2].

What it means for teams

The interesting part is not the leaderboard but the price. If a small post-trained model really produces client-ready spreadsheets and memos at around a sixtieth of the cost of a frontier model, the economics of document-heavy agents change: you can afford to generate several drafts and have a stronger model judge them. Treat the vendor scores as a starting hypothesis. Run it on ten of your own real deliverables, have someone who does the work grade the output, and wait for the weights before you plan on running it in-house.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

01

What is Ultramarine 1 Flash?

Ultramarine 1 Flash is an agentic model for professional knowledge work from Paper Instruments, published on 14 October 2026 (US time). It is built by applying large-scale reinforcement learning to GLM-5.3 Flash, an open base model, and is aimed at deliverables such as Excel workbooks, PowerPoint decks, Word memos and work inside business systems like ERP and MES.

02

How much does Ultramarine 1 Flash cost?

On the Ultramarine API it costs $0.15 per million input tokens, $0.03 per million cached input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, the same as GLM-5.3 Flash. Paper Instruments says it averages $0.13 per task on its internal knowledge-work suite, against $8.19 for Claude Fable 5 and $2.09 for GPT-5.6 Sol at max reasoning.

03

Is Ultramarine 1 Flash open source?

Not yet. Paper Instruments calls it an open model and its product page says model weights are coming soon on Hugging Face, but as of 16 October 2026 the weights have not been published. Today it is available through the hosted API only.

04

How does Ultramarine 1 Flash compare with Claude and GPT?

On Paper Instruments' internal PI Knowledge Work benchmark it scores 59.3, ahead of Claude Fable 5 at 57.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol at 55.1, and within three points of Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol. On public benchmarks it leads JobBench and FrontierFinance among the models shown, but trails Gemini 3.8 Flash and Claude Fable 5 on DiligenceBench and APEX-Agents 1.1. These are the company's own figures.

05

How do developers call the Ultramarine API?

The API is OpenAI-compatible at https://api.paperinstruments.com/v1 with the model id ultramarine-1-flash, and also supports a Responses endpoint and the Anthropic SDK messages route. Paper Instruments recommends max reasoning effort and streaming. Reasoning cannot be turned off.
